Teaching Philosophy

My teaching is grounded in critical pedagogy and a commitment to equity. I design my courses to center diverse voices and to challenge students to examine how language and literature intersect with power, identity, and justice. I believe every student brings valuable knowledge to the classroom, and my role is to create a space where those perspectives are heard, questioned, and deepened through rigorous engagement with texts and ideas.

Whether in an introductory survey or an advanced seminar, I emphasize close reading, collaborative discussion, and writing as a tool for critical thought and social reflection. I encourage students to connect literary analysis to the world beyond the university — to see reading and writing as acts with real stakes.

Current Courses

EN 1001: Introduction to English Literature

Fall 2025 | Undergraduate

A survey of major works in English literature from the early modern period to the present. Students develop skills in close reading, critical writing, and literary analysis while exploring how literature reflects and shapes cultural values. Readings are selected to foreground diverse voices and traditions.

EN 4010: Postcolonial Literature and Social Justice

Winter 2026 | Senior Seminar

An advanced seminar examining how postcolonial writers engage with questions of justice, resistance, and belonging. Students read novels, poetry, and essays from Africa, South Asia, the Caribbean, and the Middle East alongside critical theory. The course culminates in a community-engaged research project connecting literary analysis to contemporary social issues.
